CBD vs. THC Gummies: What’s the Difference?

CBD vs. THC Gummies: What’s the Difference?

Key Takeaways:

  • CBD gummies don’t get you high, while THC gummies can produce euphoria, relaxation, and other intoxicating effects.
  • Both CBD and THC gummies can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, so give them time to work before taking more.
  • THC gummies can show up on a drug test. CBD itself isn’t typically tested for, but some CBD gummies contain enough THC to cause a positive result.

Put a CBD gummy next to a THC gummy, and you may not be able to tell them apart. But take one without checking the label, and your afternoon could go very differently than planned.

The biggest difference is what happens after you eat one: THC can get you high, while CBD generally doesn’t. For some people, that settles it. But you’ll also want to think about whether you need to stay clear-headed, how much experience you have with THC, and when you plan to take your gummy.

Here’s how CBD and THC gummies stack up and what to know before choosing one.

What Are CBD and THC Gummies?

CBD and THC may come in the same chewy package, but that’s about where the similarities end.

CBD Gummies

CBD gummies contain cannabidiol (CBD), which doesn’t produce the high associated with THC. The effects can be pretty subtle, too. You may just feel a little calmer or more relaxed rather than noticeably different. We’ve had customers wonder whether their CBD gummy is working because they don’t feel a dramatic change. That’s not necessarily unusual with CBD.

You’ll also see CBD gummies labeled as isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum. Isolate contains just CBD, broad-spectrum includes other cannabis compounds but typically no THC, and full-spectrum can contain small amounts of THC. That’s worth knowing if you’re trying to avoid THC completely.

THC Gummies

THC gummies contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so these are the ones that can get you high. Depending on the gummy, you might end up relaxed on the couch, raiding the snack cabinet, laughing a little more than usual, or ready for bed. And with THC, dose can change the experience quite a bit.

And you can’t tell by looking. A 2.5 mg gummy and a 10 mg gummy may be the same size and flavor, but that doesn’t mean they’ll feel anything alike.

CBD vs. THC Gummies: Key Differences

CBD and THC gummies have plenty in common, including the fact that both are edibles and both interact with your endocannabinoid system. But the experience can be surprisingly different.

Intoxicating Effects

THC gummies can get you high. CBD gummies generally won’t. That’s the biggest difference between the two.

THC activates CB1 receptors in the brain, which can leave you feeling anything from relaxed and euphoric to glued to the couch. Your sense of time may get a little wonky, food might taste especially good, and the effects become more noticeable as the dose goes up.

CBD doesn’t work that way. There’s no THC-style high, and the effects are usually much less obvious. You may simply feel a little calmer or more relaxed.

Uses

Sometimes you want to take the edge off without checking out for the rest of the day. Other times, getting a little high is exactly the point.

CBD gummies are commonly used for things like relaxation, sleep, and everyday stress without the intoxicating effects of THC.

THC gummies are also popular for winding down, but they come with the high, and some people use them for things like sleep, discomfort, or simply for fun.

Dosage

CBD and THC gummies can have very different numbers on the label. It’s common to see 25 mg or even 50 mg of CBD in a gummy, while a THC gummy may contain just 2.5, 5, or 10 mg.

There’s a reason for that. CBD doesn’t cause a high, while even a few milligrams of THC can produce noticeable effects, especially if you’re new to it. If you’re new to THC gummies, start with a low dose and give it time before taking more.

How Long Do CBD and THC Gummies Take to Work?

If you just ate a gummy and don’t feel anything yet, give it time. Gummies have to make their way through your digestive system first, so you may be waiting anywhere from about 30 minutes to 2 hours before you notice the effects [1].

How quickly that happens can depend on the dose, what you’ve eaten, your metabolism, and the product itself. CBD can also be subtle, so you may not notice it in the same obvious way you would a THC gummy.

With THC, the wait is especially important. Taking another gummy because the first one isn’t kicking in can leave you with a much stronger high once both doses catch up with you. Wait at least two hours before taking more THC.

Side Effects of CBD and THC Gummies

A gummy may look harmless enough, but side effects are still possible.

CBD can cause drowsiness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite, and it can interact with some medications [2]. THC can lead to dry mouth, a faster heart rate, slower reaction time, coordination problems, or anxiety. And if you take too much THC, those effects can become more pronounced and turn an otherwise pleasant experience into an uncomfortable one.

That’s especially worth remembering with gummies because there’s no taking a dose back once you’ve eaten it. Start low, wait before taking more, and save THC for a time when you won’t need to drive or be anywhere important.

Will CBD or THC Gummies Show Up on a Drug Test?

If you take THC gummies, assume they can show up on a drug test.

One misconception we run into is that anything labeled “CBD” must be THC-free. CBD itself isn’t what standard drug tests look for, but CBD gummies aren’t automatically in the clear. Full-spectrum products can contain small amounts of THC, which may be enough to cause a positive result, particularly with repeated use [3].

If you need to pass a drug test, check the lab results for THC rather than relying on the CBD label. Even then, no CBD product can guarantee a negative result.

Are CBD and THC Gummies Legal?

Here’s where things get a little messy. Under current federal law, hemp and hemp-derived products can contain up to 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight, while marijuana-derived THC remains federally controlled.

But crossing the federal line doesn’t automatically give a gummy the green light everywhere. States can restrict or ban CBD and hemp-derived THC products, so what’s legal in one state may be off-limits in another.

There’s another change coming soon. Starting November 12, 2026, new federal hemp rules will use total THC and place a 0.4 mg-per-container limit on finished hemp-derived cannabinoid products. So before you buy, check the rules where you live rather than relying on “hemp-derived” on the label.

How to Choose a Quality CBD or THC Gummy

You can learn a lot more from the back of the package than the marketing claims on the front. Before buying, check for:

  • Third-party lab testing: Look for a recent certificate of analysis (COA) that confirms how much CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids are actually in the product.
  • Milligrams per gummy: Don’t get distracted by a big total like 500 mg. Check how much CBD or THC you’re getting in each piece.
  • THC content: This is especially important with CBD gummies. Full-spectrum products may contain THC even when CBD is the main ingredient on the label.
  • Contaminant testing: A good COA should also show testing for unwanted extras like pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
  • A batch number: Ideally, the batch or lot number on the package should match the COA, so you know you’re looking at results for the gummy you actually bought.

Final Thoughts: CBD vs. THC Gummies

CBD or THC? It really comes down to the experience you want. CBD lets you keep the high out of the equation, while THC is there when getting high is part of the plan.

We also see customers who aren’t necessarily looking for an either/or choice. Gummies containing both CBD and THC are another option, with different ratios available depending on the product.

Whichever you choose, check the dose and buy from a brand that shows you what’s actually in the gummy.

At Carolina Hemp Cafe, you can shop lab-tested CBD and THC gummies in different strengths and cannabinoid combinations, whether you want CBD on its own, THC, or a little of both.

CBD vs THC Gummies: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few common questions people ask when deciding between CBD and THC gummies.

Which Is Better, CBD or THC Gummies?

CBD gummies may be a better fit if you want to relax without getting high, while THC gummies are for when getting high is part of the experience. You can also find gummies with both CBD and THC if you want a mix of the two.

Which Is Better for Anxiety, CBD or THC?

CBD doesn’t get you high, and some research suggests it may help with anxiety. THC is less predictable: A dose that feels relaxing to one person can make someone else feel more anxious, especially as the dose goes up. Research on CBD is still developing, so it shouldn’t be treated as a proven anxiety treatment.

Which Is Better for Sleep, CBD or THC Gummies?

Some people find that THC helps them relax or feel sleepy, while CBD offers a way to wind down without getting high. But research on both CBD and THC for sleep is mixed, so neither is guaranteed to give you a better night’s sleep.

Can You Take CBD and THC Gummies Together?

Yes. You’ll even find gummies that contain both CBD and THC. Just remember that CBD doesn’t automatically cancel out THC, so you can still get high from a gummy that contains both.

Can CBD Gummies Get You High?

CBD itself won’t get you high. Full-spectrum CBD gummies can contain small amounts of THC, though. If you want to avoid THC completely, check both the label and lab results before taking one.
